10 Advantages of Playing Board Games

H/T @RayInNJ

Some of these ideas are inter-related.

    1. More family together time.

    2. Can replace or supplement family meal time.

In the not too distant past, families would gather around the table for dinner. This was the time when everyone got caught up on what was happening at work, or school, with the neighbors, etc. That ritual is a rarity in most households today. IRL face time can be imitated by screens, but it can't be duplicated.

    3. Get to beat up on friends and family with no harm done.

Winning feels good. Even when its Monopoly money. Or of course, SORRY! as you knock your annoying brother's piece off the table.

    4. Sometimes they can actually make you smarter.

Whether its learning to count and keep score with Rummy or strategic thinking with Chess, board games can exercise the brain in many different ways.

    5. It's not always a competition

With the ever-increasing number of collaborative style games, the players must work together to accomplish a goal or defeat an enemy. If they don't, they will surely lose.

    6. Another avenue to find success.

Everyone wants to feel like they are really good at Something, sometimes Anything. Board games is just another way to give yourself a little dopamine hit.

    7. No electricity needed.

Did the power go out? Break out some dice and yell Yahtzee!!

    8. Still pretty economical.

Yes, the price of quality board games can now be a little pricey. Even the old staples cost more than they used to. But have you taken the whole family out to the movies or entertainment venue lately? Even if the game is played once, and then banished to the back of the closet for ever more, you are still breaking even for a night of entertainment.

    9. Fans of Board Games can be Fanatical

Everybody needs that group of like-minded to belong to. Just like every other pastime, some board game players can become totally consumed. In moderation, this type of total fandom can be as much fun as actually playing the game.

    10. If you get bored, there are always House Rules.

Every board game can have a nearly infinite variety in play experience simply by tweaking the published rules a bit. Add a little. Ignore one piece. Or get really crazy and create a solitaire version of every game you have. (I see you only child.)

    11. Bonus: Combine with other family activities

Have you ever played Snakes and Ladders while watching Jumanji?
