10 Books to Read to Improve Your Writing
This list is particular to me. Others might have different lists that work for them. I always believe the best books to read to improve writing are NOT books about writing but great, well-written books. Maybe a little bit of the writer's skill will soak into me.
1. Jesus' Son, by Denis Johnson.
A book of linked short stories about a character (based on Johnson) named 'Fuckhead'.
2. Night Train by Thom Jones
A book of short stories. It's #2 on the list only because I am re-reading it right now. The rest of the list is in no particular order
3. The Things They Carried, by Tim O'Brien
A book of linked short stories about soldiers in Vietnam
4. Collected stories of Amy Hempel
5. Old Man and the Sea
6. Spectacle by Susan Steinberg
7. Post Office by Charles Bukowski
and some of his other novels like Factotum, Hollywood, Ham on Rye
8. Person by Sam Pink
Weird style
9. Ultraluminous by Katherine Faw
Beautiful
