10 inexpensive and durable food items for a healthy diet

I don't like going shopping. Also, when times are tough, it feels good to be able to put food on the table for a few weeks if necessary. And finally, cooking with such cheap food shows how little we really need.

    1. Dried or canned legumes

    Beans, lentils, peas. For all kinds of stews and soups.

    2. Apples

    In a cool and dry place, they can be stored for months. Great for baked apples and assorted cakes.

    3. Whole wheat flour

    Actually amazing how cheap flour is. Making your own bread is easy - but It takes a few attempts to learn it. The same applies to making your own pasta.

    4. Sugar and spices: salt, pepper, garlic, turmeric, paprika

    Probably more than one item ;-)

    5. Eggs

    Great source of protein. They can be stored up to a month.

    6. Oatmeal

    Grated apples + oatmeal -> extremely cheap and healthy breakfast

    7. Onions

    Very versatile. They can be delicate, sweet or spicy.

    8. Potatoes

    Probably the most versatile food item: baked potatoes, french fries, potato pancakes, potato salad

    9. Olive oil or another vegetable oil

    Makes everything taste better. With some milk, mustard and vinegar, you can make your own mayonnaise.

    10. A whole dried ham

    Adds flavor to stews and soups. Essential for ham and eggs. Can be stored for months. Not that cheap, but not expensive either. And just delicious!
