10 More things I learned from “The Future of the Mind” by Michio Kaku

1. Emotions are an important part of advanced AI
The author gives the example of a robot rescuing computer files instead of people from a burning building if there are no emotions. Without emotions, it is difficult to assign things a level of importance.
2. To integrate in society robots will need to be able to lie: tell “white lies “
3. Robots are perceived of differently in the Japanese culture
There is a concept of the Shinto religion where everything has life. This is why Japanese robots are often playful and friendly opposed to horrifying murderous machines in the US from sci fi movies and the military development of robots.
4. Many projects to map the human brain are expected to last for 100 years
So they are planning the project in the same way that cathedrals were constructed: where the grandchildren would finish the project.
5. Ray Kurzweil imagines a time when nano bots can recreate anything molecule by molecule
This was actually happening in the Johnny Depp movie that I keep referencing in my mind about the capabilities of artificial intelligence.
6. The next step in consciousness after becoming a machine will be existing as pure energy and be able to travel the universe
Duuuude....
Your consciousness would be printed on a lazer beam and sent across the universe into a surrogate body.
7. “Connectome “ is the term that the author is using for a digital/out of body representation of consciousness: like a hard drive representing a person’s consciousness
8. It is likely that intelligent aliens might be so advanced that we would not even be aware of their presence if they were here
For example, they may be pure energy at a frequency that we cannot detect. The author use the example of an ants awareness of what an 8 Lane Highway next to it meant for humans.
9. Many scientists warned about a pandemic brought on through drug research either on purpose or by accident
This book was written before Covid.
10. Overactive micro machines could go into overdrive and create grey goo
This is the fear that malfunctioning micro machines that can build things from atoms could start turning everything into a useless goo.
