10 Reasons I hate owning a car
Currently, our family owns 2 cars. Would prefer to have 1 or none. Working towards that again.
1. Buying Process
Buying a car is one of the worst buying processes out there. I hear it has gotten better. Only bought a few cars in my life. Keep them for years.2. Gas
Spend a lot every month. Yes, prices are higher right now, I didn't like paying for gas even when they were under 2 bucks.3. Maintenaince
Usually have to take car in a few times a year. Takes a lot of time and sometimes money. Luckily, have not had too much trouble with my cars over the years.4. Insurance
Comically expensive. Currently, I pay over 1500 a year for car insurance on two cars. Haven't had an accident in decades?5. Depreciate
Cars lose value very fast. Maybe right now, with such a low supply of cars in the US, you can get good value for a used car.6. Parking
Would rather get dropped off somewhere. Or walk. Parking is a pain in congested areas.7. Time
Sitting and waiting while driving loses you a lot of time. If someone drives you, you can work on other things. Yes, you can take phone calls or listen to audiobooks or podcasts while driving.8. Stress
If something is wrong with your car, or if you get into an accident and now you have been relying on a car, it is a massive pain in the rear. This has happened to me once or twice and makes me want to own a car even less.9. Alternative - Uber/Lyft
Took Uber/Lyft exclusively for one year. It was great. Saved me time. You do have to make sure you give yourself enough time, in case something goes wrong. Less hassle. All the drivers have been nice, so far.10. Alternative - Bike
Combined with Uber/Lyft you can bike a lot of places. I have a foldable bike, so this worked out pretty well. Unless it's blazing hot, freezing cold, or raining.11. Alternative - Scooter
Never used one, but they seem to be all over cities. Did know some people who bought them and they did not last long. Maybe you need to buy an expensive one.12. Alternative - Public Transport
Depending on the city, this is the way to go. Affordable. Decent schedules. Combine with the other alternatives and you can make it work.
