OPERATION LIFE SAVER week runs Sept 12-18, and I've listed some reasons for it.
1. Every 3 hours in the USA a person is hit by a train.
2. More than 2100 people are injured or killed annually in crossing and trespassing incidents in North America.
3. More than 50% of collisions occur at crossings equipped with lights or gates.
4. Many people don't realize that every railroad track is on private property.
5. My semi-truck takes at least the length of a football field to stop. But it takes at least a mile for a train to stop.
6. There's supposed to be a little blue sign by every train crossing. This gives the telephone # to call, if any hazard blocks the tracks. Before calling move quite a safe distance away.
7. My girlfriend's dad was killed driving a train. The explosion occured after the train hit a stuck propane truck, in 1964. But it's amazing how many deaths still occur from train accidents.
8. Trains always have the right-of-way.
9. A car is like a soda-can; in relation to the weight of a train.
10. Always cross at pedestrian or roadway crossings. Refrain from using cell phones, headphones, or having other things or people distract you around railroad tracks.
