10 Things I Learned About Games and Learning

10 Things I Learned About Games and Learning
Preview

    1. Edward Thorndike pioneered the foundation of behavioral psychology (and learning/behavior study)

    2. There are three “laws of learning”

    3. Learning and psychology is a complicated field, hard to produce concrete results

    4. The psychology of learning can be hijacked by poor game designers

    5. Worse, shallow “learning” game design reduces “gameplay” to superficial, external dopamine reward loops (badges, dings)

    6. This denies the power of games as an engaging platform for expanding the mind and human potential

    7. There are more failures than successes in the world of games-as-behavior-modifiers

    8. That means there is an opportunity if we can be honest about the effort

    9. Edutainment is garbage (more opinion than fact, but I haven’t seen anything to change my mind yet)

    10. Studies that look at learning and behavior through games and play are flimsy, and it’s not a well studied topic
