1. They were amazing storytellers.

2. They had very easy-going personalities.

3. They were very clear about the big picture, not just the small details.

4. They were extremely knowledgeable in related areas outside their fields. They weren't just one-track minds.

5. They were in, many ways, philosophical.

6. They were amazing at using analogies to explain important principles.

7. They really knew how to make you think. In other words, they taught you to think, they didn't just think for you.

8. They could make complex things so simple.

9. They were very well established and respected in their fields, and had many great accomplishments themselves.

10. They focused on results and not on status. They couldn't care less about politics.

11. (BONUS) They knew that the more they learned, the less they found that they actually knew.
