10 versatile spices to keep in the kitchen
With this collection at hand, you can make lots of things. I rarely measure anything in the kitchen. I use some combination of these ingredients to make skillet meals, chili, barbecue rubs, sautéing vegetables, oatmeal, omelets, Italian, Mexican, stir fry and more.

1. Garlic powder
Goes well with almost everything.
2. Pepper melange in a mill
Freshly cracked pepper tastes better. Variety is the spice of life, or black pepper is good too.
3. Jane’s Crazy Mixed Up Salt
This is great on tomatoes and vegetables.
4. Accent (AKA MSG)
This is "magic stuff" that is basically a drug. Food will taste better. Use wisely and sparingly but it can add a kick to just about anything.
5. Oregano/Italian blend
This can add some good texture and flavor.
6. Sea salt
Iodized salt has a strong flavor: sea salt is milder and has a good flavor. You can go down the rabbit hole of exotic salt as well but sea salt is cheap and versatile.
7. Cayenne pepper
Great in oatmeal! Also try a tiny pinch in coffee if you are feeling adventurous.
8. Soy sayce
Not just for stir fry!
9. Tabasco sauce
Great for soup.
10. Brown sugar
Good for sweet things but also for BBQ rubs for any meat or fish. Add to stir fry.
