$315,000 on medical expenses in retirement
Since 2002 Fidelity has published an estimate of how much a 65 year old retired couple will have to spend in retirement on medical expenses and that number is now up to $315,000.
Last night I talked about opting out of medicating chronic maladies by changing behaviors, basically stop eating carbs and lift weights. The research on this is abundant, cutting carbs and lifting is our best shot at reversing many chronic maladies that require expensive prescriptions. The cost of insulin is out of control and other drugs will likely follow.
Cutting carbs and lifting weights is our best shot at taking a big chunk out of that $315,000. Behavior modification could save you hundreds of thousands of dollars over your lifetime, all the moreso if you're in your 40's and already taking these types of medications--plenty in their 40's do in fact already take these meds.
It may not be easy but it can be that simple and the fact that we have the chance to solve or prevent our own problems is very empowering.
