Advice that will change someone's life

An expired challenge I saw. My two cents.

    1. Don't wait for or expect someone else to solve your problem

No one will care more about your outcome than you. Not a politician, not your boss, not your company (you'd be replaced before your funeral), not your friends, not people at your church, no one. It is up to us to prevent or solve our own problems.

    2. Make your health your top priority

Being fit and healthy allows you to most effectively tend to and care for your other priorities. Yes family should be the top priority but if you're sick, not able bodied, you can't meet the needs of your family anywhere near as well.

Cut carbs and lift weights. Retaining the ability to bend down and pick up heavy things is crucial to successful aging.

    3. Live below your means

Every other aspect of life becomes easier when you are not worried about money.

    4. There are very few people in your life who's opinion counts for anything

    5. Don't attempt to keep up with others

Related to number 4. You have no idea what that neighbor or brother in-law is going through to have the more expensive house and car.

    6. Keep learning/stay curious

    7. Time is worth more than money

This works on at least two levels. The time (freedom) that goes with setting your own schedule (truly owning your time) and in the context of volunteering, your time is worth more to the organization than your donation.

    8. Do your future self as many favors as possible

This could be an endless list of its own. It relates to health, finances, career optionality, lifestyle optionality and so on. A few good decisions in your 20's & 30's can determine whether your 40's, 50's and older are a great time in your life or very challenging. 50's, fit, with a little in bank makes for a great time in life versus overmortgaged, taking 8 medications unable to do the things you enjoy. Even your 40's is old enough for things to start going wrong.

    9. What about writing?

I don't know about this one. I see a lot of people here saying it which is probably some sort of selection bias. I've been writing for a very long time and I love doing it, I've benefited in terms of growth & development and it has led to several financial opportunities. I can't see myself ever giving it up.

Where I say I don't know is how few people who do it. Are you on Facebook? I have about 400 connections on there and I don't know if even 5 of them do any writing. I'm friends with James on there so there's one! LOL

    10. Actively volunteer

This adds mightily to our sense of purpose, does good where you live and can be a source of career/lifestyle optionality.

    11. Make a point of becoming financially literate

This ties in with many others on this list.

    12. Do the right thing, be a good person, don't lie
