I was at the gym on an elliptical machine listening to some music with a very distinctive drum beat. Someone was on a treadmill behind me going at it in full force. I noticed his footfalls were at the exact same tempo as the drum beats I was listening to on my headphones... what an odd coincidence! And thus I had an idea for today's list.
1. Winter break
When I was in graduate school, I was in a long distance relationship with my girlfriend who lived in Taiwan. We spoke on the phone every day and I took the long 24-hour journey to visit her between every semester.
One time on my way back home from Taiwan, I got in the customs line at Tokyo Narita Airport. The guy standing in front of me happened to be one of my friends in graduate school!
BTW, the girlfriend I was visiting happens to be my wife now :)
2. More college friends
So on another trip to Taiwan, I went with my girlfriend's family to a seafood restaurant next to the water. What do you know, another one of my American college friends just happens to walk in!
A few years ago, I tried the freelance thing and it didn't quite work out. So I applied for my old job back and got back in, but the catch was I'd have to go through new hire orientation all over again. Most of the people I was there with were fresh out of college. One of my new coworkers had a distinctive Nepalese last name. I asked him one day, "I recognize your last name... you wouldn't have to know someone named Nefaur, would you?" He replied, "He's my brother!"
I used to do Kendo with my new coworker's brother 20 years ago!
4. A new home for the dog
When our beloved border collie mix dog of 13 years died last year, my wife sort of impulsively adopted another border collie mix. It turned out to be a mistake. The new dog was nothing like our old dog. Our old dog was so chill and calm. The new dog was full of energy and hyper. He chewed up everything in the house. I know it's not the dog's fault, and we were ready to invest whatever was necessary to live with this dog for the long haul, but during Thanksgiving dinner a coincidental twist of fate happened.
My wife was talking with one of my second cousin's husband's parents. They owned a farm and had just lost one of their farm dogs due to old age, and were looking for another farm dog. Our new dog happened to be a 6-month old border collie/blue heeler mix... a type of dog made for working on a farm. So long story short, we sent our new dog to live with them and be their farm dog. The dog seems happier than ever in his new home, and it was such a coincidence!
5. Birthday week
I have three kids, ages 8, 11, and 13. They were born on October 4, October 6, and October 8. Different years, but all in the same week! So unlike normal people who celebrate three birthdays for three kids, we have a birthday week celebration. And BTW, all three kids have exactly the same initials too, "AHA".
