Easy ways to Increase your Food Security

Some quick and simple ways to slowly build your pantry and stretch your food dollars

    1. Learn to cook a few simple meals

Start with a pasta or rice dish and a protein preparation (burgers, chicken, fish)

    2. Whenever possible, buy shelf stable goods.

    3. But don’t forget to add some fruits and veggies.

Fresh is always best but having some frozen and canned veg increase your options

    4. When you go shopping, buy one extra item.

Did you run out of peanut butter? Buy two.

    5. Plan meals ahead

And make a grocery list based on your planned menu.

    6. Don’t be afraid to try a new recipe or food item

Eventually, you build up your skill level and comfort in the kitchen and pantry.

    7. Shop the sales.

Your grandparents did this. Clip coupons. Buy me on sale that is getting closer to its sell by date. You can use it immediately or freeze it.

    8. Make sure to include a small amount of “junk food”.

Whatever treat you like. Chocolate. Potato chips. In small amounts, it keeps you content and motivated.

    9. Sprouts and microgreens.

You can grow these on your steps, your windowsill, or even in a mesh bag hanging off your backpack. Very simple, and packed with nutrients.

    10. Gardening

This takes some space, (maybe not as much as you think), time, and know how. And some of the variables are beyond your control. BUT, the single biggest way to increase your food security is to become your own grocery. But what if I can’t produce anything?

    11. Offer yourself as a co-producer.

Do you know a fantastic farmer who might need a hand. Or maybe you could help with seed and planting costs in return for a portion of the harvest. Some ranchers generate income by “pre-selling” their livestock. Yes, you can buy half a cow, or a pig in advance. Or a down payment and remainder upon delivery. This will include butchering and packaging. For providing some up front money, you are returned a box of some of the freshest meat you’ve ever had. And it will always be cheaper / pound than the meat counter.

    12. Hunting, fishing, trapping.

The first and purest way of “making meat” Lots of skill necessary. Some up front equipment costs. Time investment not always worth it. But being outdoors has its own advantages. If you’ve never tried, ask someone to take you fishing. You’ll have a good time.
