Every story has a protagonist, someone who goes on the journey. Harry Potter is the protagonist of the Harry Potter series. Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz is the protagonist of that story.
Every story has an antagonist, someone who opposes the protagonist and tries to prevent them from reaching their goal. In Star Wars Darth Vader is the antagonist. In The Wizard of Oz it's the Wicked Witch of the West.
Every great story has a quest. It's not just about one event but a series of events that lead to a final resolution where something changes for the main character (and hopefully for everyone else in the story).
There's always some conflict between what the main character wants and what others want or what other obstacles stand in their way. Cinderella wanted to go to the ball but her stepmother and stepsisters didn't want her to go so they made her do all sorts of chores before she could go. Luke Skywalker wanted to join up with Obi-Wan Kenobi but Darth Vader was trying to kill him so he had to run away first.
Great stories always have some sort of moral lesson or message at their core even if it seems like it's just an entertaining story about someone going on an adventure and overcoming obstacles along the way. The Wizard of Oz is about how you can be happy with your life even if you don't have all your wishes granted by magical forces beyond your control (Dorothy wanted to get back home but she was happy once she realized home wasn't so bad after all). Star Wars is about how there are good people out there worth fighting for even if you are from a desert planet far, far away from everyone else in the universe (Luke Skywalker).
