Get nice things without paying for them

Many clubs, artists and societies of all kinds want to get their views out there or win customers. For this purpose there are lectures and events, which are followed by a buffet and often sparkling wine.

Announce when it's your birthday. Explain that you are working for some higher purpose and donations are welcome.

Apply for grants and subsidies of all kinds. If you are unemployed, want to start a business, are still studying or belong to a minority, there is bound to be an authority that will be happy to support you.

Due to consumer protection, many products can be used for a while and then returned. In the meantime, use them to create something beautiful. Most clubs and fitness centers offer trial sessions. In theory, you could take part in a different trial session every week, filling a whole semester with interesting sporting activities.

In most countries it is legal to pick berries and mushrooms in the forest. There are often abandoned fruit trees in public places. Beautiful stones and other things can be found in creek beds and on the beach.

Many libraries give away books and magazines that they no longer need. Books and magazines can also be found in some waste paper bins.

When the bulky waste is picked up, it often contains useful things. In front of the collection points for old fabrics and bulky waste, you can approach people who want to donate old but still functional appliances or used furniture.

Adult education centers teach prospective hairdressers, who always need models. A lot of bread is produced in courses for bakers. Aspiring web designers and graphic artists need references - and are therefore often willing to work for free.

Samples of all kinds are often distributed in supermarkets. At universities, students distribute daily newspapers and magazines free of charge - because the publishers hope to win future readers. it doesn't really matter if you are over 60 and no longer a student.

Many companies hold competitions. Participating is too much of a hassle for most people. Anyone who takes part in all the competitions therefore has a surprisingly good chance of winning something. I know a woman in her 60's who keeps winning short trips, clothes and vouchers for goods.

Many media outlets with classified ads have a section for items that are free. Among other things, I gave away a guitar and a kick scooter before moving some years ago.
