How to realize you've gotten really good at coaching

I'm a dog trainer. What that really means is I coach people. The dogs are the easy part. I love doing my Epic Camps with dogs because it is so fun to see a dog go from anxious or unruly to confident and calm. But the truth is, I've got to transfer how to keep it going to the people the dog lives with full time. Here are some things I've learned about getting good at coaching people to live a life well played with their dogs.

    1. I no longer "sell" people into my programs

    2. People come to me from referrals

    3. If it is not a referral, when I'm in a conversation with someone about how I can help with their dog, they get a feeling they want to work with me and the next step flows

    4. The analogies I used in coaching people through dog situations bring on light bulb moments all the time

    5. I can easily see when someone is looking for a quick fix and when they get the concept its a lifestyle of better small choices to make daily

    6. On rare occasion I have someone who starts a training program and then doesn't want to do it. I refund immediately. They aren't the people who want a better life, they want to stick to excuses about not getting what they want.

    7. I leave a training session and have "that was fun" come out of my mouth out loud to myself as an unconscious statement

    8. I like listening to other trainers without bias because no matter what the method, when someone is passionate about what they teach there are golden nuggets to glean and learn from

    9. Dogs suddenly become "good" around me for what appears to be no reason at all to the owner 🤣

    10. I accepted that what I do is important, professional and much needed in a world that struggles with anxiety, fear and lack of going back to basic fundamental physical practices that don't involve attention on a smartphone
