Ideas for 1st time Runner

I have to preface this with the fact that I am not a runner. However, I have been an athlete since I was a kid and I played football, basketball, beach volleyball and tons of soccer and ran a one mile race when I was 17. I workout and do lots of cardio with a combonation of machines, swimming and riding my bike. With that all out of the way, here are some things that might be obvious to some, and very basic things I would think about before attempting to run a half marathon:

    1. Hydrate

Most people already know this if you are even slightly athletic but it is crucial to do, especially during the Summerime. Drink tons of water leading up to the marathon.

    2. Eat healthy

    3. Rest

    4. Breathe right

Natural tendency is to breathe through your nose and out of your mouth, and that works when you are just doing daily activites. When you are actively running, you should breathe through your mouth only. Your muscles need oxygen and breathing through the mouth is the most effective way to inhale and exhale oxygen.

    5. Have the right shoes

Invest in a decent pair of running shoes, it matters. I remember when I ran that mile race and I had on a basic pair of sneakers and my feet were pounding after the race and seemed to never stop and they were sore for a couple of days. When I walk or jog, I have a few decent pairs of running shoes and that has really made a difference on how my feet feel during and after the run.
