King's Delights, Day 5

    1. Unboxing pen from Nicola Fisher and Chris Fisher, the Blind Woodturner

Recently @nicolafisher picked an entry of mine here on NotePD to qualify for receiving a free pen created by her husband, Chris Fisher, the Blind Woodturner. What wonderful craftsmanship! How good it feels in my hand with heft to it, not like these featherweight mass-produced bits of office supply flotsam I mostly use. (You can read Chris's newsletter, too.) Take a look at this:

It came in a velvet-cover black box stout enough to serve as a permanent home.

I like a pen with some heft to it. This one is just the right weight! I'm slightly concerned about getting refills since I live across the pond from where it was birthed, but I'll cross that bridge when I have to burn it. I'm not likely to carry it around and use it a lot, because I'm too afraid of losing it!

Can you see the beauty of this thing? Thank you, @nicolafisher , and my thanks and admiration to Chris!

    2. IEP meeting at my grandson's elementary school

Those of you who have been through such meetings might be saying, "How could you call that a delight?" And yet, it was. My daughter invited me to sit in on the meeting to provide some knowledgeable outside perspective. What made it a delight? My grandson transferred to this school this year because he wasn't getting good support at his previous school. In this school year, not yet finished, he has made amazing progress. This comes from a variety of factors, but what made it a delight was observing the obvious and genuine caring of everyone involved in educating him. I'm certain that the feeling of support he has in this school (Friendsville Elementary School, for the curious) has given him hope, and made him want to do well. When I first walked in, I could detect the feeling of community there, and all my interactions with them during this meeting confirmed that.

    3. Pizza and chili-cheese coney

Not at the same time. And I don't pretend it was healthy. But I indulged in a slice of pizza from one of our local convenience store chains (because I've always thought their pizza was actually pretty good), and then later enjoyed a chili-cheese coney and order of tater tots from Sonic. It worried my wife because I was taking longer getting home than she expected, but it was important to take my time (as I've mentioned before). Eating these two snacks/meals slowly, savoring the taste, listening to the traffic (for the pizza, since I ate in the parking lot) and petting my cat (while eating the Sonic food, something that doesn't interest the cat) all made for a delightful experience. Nothing fancy. Just noticing the sensory input and appreciating the abundance.
