Ten Favorite GI Joe Sets
My favorite toy as a kid, and how I spent a lot of money as an adult collecting...
1. Deep Sea Diver
Got this when I had my tonsils out when I was a kid. Had hoses you could blow in to make him sink and rise.
2. GI Joe Jeep & Trailer
Won one in the "Capture Hill 79" mail-in contest. The Jeep... long since gone. But Mom saved the letter I got from Hassenfeld Brothers (before they became Hasbro) saying that I won.
3. Space Capsule with Astronaut
Lots of fun for a kid and his friends who grew up in the Moon landing era. Have a repro in my office.
4. Mine Sweeper Set
Had metal "mines" and a detector with a red light that came on when the sweeper got close.
5. Scuba Diver
Another pool play GI Joe, until the rubber deteriorated...
6. Australian Jungle Fighter
Just seemed so cool, with the beige uniform and machete.
7. Footlocker
Lots of accessories, and a place to put them so the dog wouldn't chew them.
8. Communications Set
Besides the phone, the poncho was really cool, and was one of a few accessories that wouldn't leave. Found one in some old box of stuff just a few years ago long after I thought all were lost or sold at a yard sale.
9. Survival Set
Yes, the blow-up raft. Like the Comm set poncho, rafts are indestructible. Unless your friends poked holes in them.
10. Crash Crew
The silver uni, all the accessories (the pliers got lost immediately)... lots of fun.
