The Year-Long Idea List Challenge: Set and Achieve Your Goals in the New Year
Notes from the challenge set by @paolo:
Are you ready to make the most of the new year? One simple yet effective way to set and achieve your goals is by creating an idea list with all of your goals for the coming year. This list should include all of the things you want to accomplish, whether they are personal or professional goals. The key is to be specific and write down as many ideas as you can.
Once you have your idea list, the next step is to commit to reviewing and updating it each month. At the beginning of each month, take some time to review your list and see which goals you can focus on. Then, throughout the month, make a concerted effort to work on those goals and make progress.
At the end of the month, review your progress and think about what you can do better in the next month. This could mean setting new goals, adjusting your existing goals, or finding new ways to stay motivated. By regularly reviewing and updating your idea list, and tracking your progress, you can stay focused and accountable, and ultimately achieve your goals for the new year.
In addition to this year-long challenge, we will also be setting a new challenge each month, where you will review your progress and make improvements to your idea list.
So, are you ready to take on the idea list challenge? Start by writing down your goals for the new year, and then make a plan to review and update your list each month. With dedication and hard work, you can make your dreams a reality in the coming year. Join us in setting and achieving your goals in the new year.
1. The Tiny Project
My biggest challenge is completion. I spin a lot of plates and can go weeks without spending any time on my own projects. I often procrastinate, too because, if I don't have enough time to complete something, I simply won't start. An aha moment showed me a different way - set smaller tasks, create smaller projects. And the Tiny Project was born.
As well as creating my own tiny projects, I'll be sharing my practices so that, hopefully, others can join in too.
2. Completion
“The most valuable real estate in the world is the graveyard. There lie millions of half-written books, ideas never launched, and talents never developed. Most people die with everything still inside of them. The way to live is to create. Die empty. Get every idea out of your head and into reality. Calling yourself creative doesn’t make it true. Make finishing your top priority.”
~ Derek Sivers, How to Live
I've had the goal of writing a book on my list, on and off, for years. During that time, the book has come into greater focus but remains unfinished. This quote from Derek Sivers is my main inspiration for 2023.
3. The Tiny Almanac
This ties in with the Tiny Project. And, possibly, living at a gentler pace. I think they're both connected. I envisage this as a tiny book (physically as well). A month by month almanac about living life with tiny steps.
4. Write more
I've had phases when I've been reasonably prolific and phases when I haven't at all. I've set up a few ways of doing tiny bits of writing every day. A tiny blog, tiny notes, using @nicolafisher" target="_blank">Twos to write Things down. I might write less each day but, cumulatively, I'm hoping that will amount to more over the year.
5. Read more
One of the best things I did in 2022 for my productivity was exiting Twitter and pretty much abandoning social media. Instead of doom scrolling, I spent more time reading on my Kindle app. I want to do more of that in 2023.
6. Create more
I hardly took any photos in 2022 and I love photography. This connects with 'wellbeing' because I take most of my photos when I'm out walking.
7. Do more
Although we absolutely love living in the countryside, I've found myself having fewer adventures and experiences. I want to do more quirky stuff in 2023, go to more new places, experience more.
8. Learn more
I love learning. I'm keen on history. I like to dive into topics and explore the length and breadth of them.
9. Wellbeing
As well as working too much my own self-care and wellbeing remains at the bottom of the list. I over work, try to fit too much into the time available, don't walk enough etc etc. Part of the Tiny Project is about taking daily tiny steps to move myself up the list of priorities.
10. Balance
Since August when I started a new work contract, I've worked crazy long hours. I've never really properly recharged. I need to find a balance so that I function more optimally. This includes all the wellbeing stuff like diet, exercise and sleep.
11. I may add to this list or hone it more
This isn't a comprehensive list and I may add to it as we go or streamline it. After all, I'm trying to achieve more by taking tiny steps. That applies to my goals as well.
