Travel Advice

After 13 days in Spain this is my list of advice for anyone looking to travel.

    1. Adaptor /conver

If you have lots of electronics this is a must. Buy an adapter (multiple sockets) and a single converter (Eg UK - EU). This will save a lot of space and money.

You may not even need all your electronics. Your phone should be more than enough. Maybe at a push, a laptop.

    2. Multiple transportation

Have alternatives to wherever you are going (Eg. We can get the bus, train or taxi (also at different times)). This will put your mind quickly to rest should you miss your planned one for any reason.

A calm mind makes much better decisions.

    3. Walk

Get outside of the tourest trap and you'll find much better deals. Live like a local for an enjoyable and cheep holiday. Walking keeps you healthy and you'll find some great hidden destinations.

    4. Negotiate

If you're not happy about a price, offer a price you would be happy to pay. The worst they can say is no. At that point you've lost nothing and can be proud in yourself, that you tried.

I was happy enough with what I payed, but looking at my bank account I really should have followed this advice.

    5. Book hotels during the week

Book hotels during the week. Weekends are when locals visit, as a result prices are pushed higher. If you book multiple days in the Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday you should find that you end up with a cheeper stay.

Failing that book a day at a time and check out multiple hotels. Your only really needing a place to sleep. Focus on a good sleep and not pools/spa/gym ect and you'll end up finding much cheeper hotels that furfil your needs just as well.

    6. Talk

Talk to everyone. How often do you find a great restaurant /bar/location in your last day? You could find these a lot sooner just by talking and finding what others recommend. Maybe you find out nothing, but your now in a position to make a new friend. Win win.

    7. Travel light

We traveled with only a bagpack and surprisingly it was more than enough. You don't need a suitcase. Pack a few tshirt, a nice shirt, shorts /trousers and underwear. Your chargers, a toothbrush /paste and a good book to read whilst you travel. Everything else can be picked up there (if needed(spoiler:it won't be)).

As a result of travelling light you can easily hop between hotels, cities or even a new country.

    8. Arrive early, really early

We arrived 2 hours early, with an app that allowed early check in. And we missed the flight. We arrived at bus station and the bus was full. Arriving early is a pain, but it's a much bigger pain to deal with missing your flight. If in doubt arrive an hour earlier than planned.

    9. Mobile data

I didn't have it and relied on WiFi. Which was OK. But there's multiple times that you may want directions or to look something up. Not having data makes this very difficult. It costs a fair bit, but when you're looking up how to get to your hotel you'll be glad you have it.

    10. Wash clothes in Bath /sink

You don't need loads of clothes. You just need to buy soap powder and wash them in the sink. Hot water, soap, clothes. Leave to soak, hang out to dry. Most hotels will lend you an iron once clothes are dry.

    11. Apply to new jobs

We've been applying for teaching jobs. Going home doesn't feel so bad when you know something better is just around the corner. Always have something in life to look forward to.

The more you apply for the better your chance to find something great.

What would it take for you to work in the destination your stay at? Ask around it's probably easier than you initially thought.

    12. Avoid taxis

They cost a lot. Trains and buses are always cheeper. It's a little more hassle, but definitely worth it when it comes to savings.

Taxies are great when you're in a rush. Don't allow yourself to get in a rush. Like I stated before - calm minds make better decisions.

    13. Bolt app

Looks like you can get cheeper taxis across Europe by using this app. I've not personally used it, but was recommended this by a friend.

    Maybe uber as well.
