10 Conversation Starters

Be willing to break the ice. It doesn't always work, but if you would like to have a conversation with someone, it works far more often than waiting for someone else to break the ice. Here are a few starting points. What are your favorites not on this list?

    1. Hi, my name is [X]. I don't think we've met. Do you think we should?

If they say no, respond with, "OK, just checking." Otherwise, a conversation will ensue.

    2. How did you get started with X?

Maybe it's their job. Maybe it's their hobby. Maybe it's their community club. Whatever it might be, people like telling their origin stories, but they hardly ever get asked for it.

    3. What do you like about X?

It's easy to think of the things that tick us off. Sales people are trained to discover the pain point. But starting with "what do you like" will bring a smile to their face.

    4. Notice something they're wearing that seems to have significance like a lapel pin or ring or earrings and ask what makes it special.

    5. When you were 10 years old, did you think you would be doing X today?

    6. What was it like where you grew up?

    7. [If they live in the area they grew up] What keeps you here? [If they are a transplant from somewhere far away] What brought you here?

    8. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

    9. If you won the lottery, what would you do?

    10. [If at a gathering] Do you know someone else here? [If you know someone else here] Would you like for me to introduce you to someone else?
