10 Conversation Starters
Be willing to break the ice. It doesn't always work, but if you would like to have a conversation with someone, it works far more often than waiting for someone else to break the ice. Here are a few starting points. What are your favorites not on this list?
1. Hi, my name is [X]. I don't think we've met. Do you think we should?
If they say no, respond with, "OK, just checking." Otherwise, a conversation will ensue.
2. How did you get started with X?
Maybe it's their job. Maybe it's their hobby. Maybe it's their community club. Whatever it might be, people like telling their origin stories, but they hardly ever get asked for it.
3. What do you like about X?
It's easy to think of the things that tick us off. Sales people are trained to discover the pain point. But starting with "what do you like" will bring a smile to their face.
