10 different things to do to learn a new language
1. Flash cards
Not just for studying in university, I use flash cards as a way to learn new vocab.
2. Smartphone flash cards
Ankiweb is an online version of flash cards you can access through your smartphone - and you don't need to be connected to the internet
3. Podcasts
Sometimes, it's about hearing the language spoken
4. Find friends to talk to
If you want to learn Japanese, see if you can practice with your Japanese friends (buy them a coffee and practice)
5. Fly to that country
I've heard the best way to learn any new language is to immerse yourself right away in that country and begin speaking - even if you don't know anything. Learn the basics, use a lot of hand motions and be okay at failing
6. Use apps or programs on the computer
Living Language, Rosetta Stone, Fluent Forever - there's many apps that can help you learn the desired language of your choice
7. Audiobooks - Pimsleur
Fun way to pick up a language while doing chores or other things you don't need to fully concentrate on
8. Watch TV shows in another language
Take your favorite TV show - say Friends or Scrubs and then put them in a different language. You can even slow down the show to help.
9. Learn the most frequent words
Every language has frequent words or characters that are used - learning these means you pick up 20% of the language but get 80% of the benefit.
10. Find a romantic partner that speaks the language
You will be really motivated when you have to learn the language to impress a potential partner
