10 popular thoughts that I disagree with
1. That it's great to be rich and famous
I would much rather be rich and completely anonymous.
2. You need to think positive most if not all the time
There is some comfort in imagining the worst case scenarios and how you would respond to them. Most of the time, even the worst outcomes are manageable. In fact, the worst possible thing usually doesn't happen!
3. X, Y, or Z reboot or sequel ruined my childhood!
If a piece of media changes in a way to traumatize you that much, maybe your childhood wasn't that great to begin with.
4. Practice makes perfect
In the real world, we've observed many people get worse with experience instead of getting better. Tracking results whenever possible while practicing should be done to avoid developing bad habits over time.
5. It's all or nothing!
While some situations can be seen in such binary terms, most require degrees of nuance to understand and solve.
6. Money can't buy happiness
It's awfully hard to be happy while hungry, in debt, and lacking the resources to improve your environment.
Money at least gives you the flexibility to address the material components of happiness. You're still going to have to do the work regarding the mental, emotional, and relationship components yourself though.
7. Good things come to those who wait
As a chronic procrastinator, I can say that this phrase is not true!
Waiting may avoid the consequences of taking foolish actions, but good outcomes typically come to those who take smart and decisive actions.
8. X group is the cause of everything terrible in my life!
Blaming outside forces for things going wrong is a very disempowering way to live. It's better to focus on what you can do to save yourself because the likelihood of an outside force saving you is unlikely.
9. Beauty is only skin deep
Where else does beauty lie? I guess if you're health conscious, you might admire the aesthetics of healthy organs? If so, where are the Instagram accounts full of ultrasounds and CT scans?
10. Your vote matters
When it comes to screwing over the people in times of crisis, there tends to be bipartisan agreement among elected officials.
