10 Random Notes From My Journals (My 2nd Brain)

When the brain thinks no more, I seek help from my second brain - my notes.

    1. Writing gives me wings

Me: writing makes me feel like a poet. Writing gives me wings.

Me: “Well, you may feel like a poet, but you sound like an idiot,” quoting Ronald from A Knight’s Tale.

This is the conversation I usually have with myself as I start thinking about what to write.

The interesting thing about committing to writing is life becomes inspiration.

Scarcity becomes abundance. Life becomes the interweaving of words and more words.

    2. Golf, life and entrepreneurship

Hitting a golf ball takes a second, but to hit the ball like a pro, many intricate and interrelated actions need to happen in cohesion. The weight distribution, …. All these need to coordinate.

And you can do all the right things, but then a little whisper from mister wind and your ball is off course.

You need to prepare, and practice, work on the foundation, but ultimately you just have to trust that everything will work out. And that you will connect the dot going backward.

And, swing like it is your first and last swing.

In theory, the last swing should not affect the next swing, but it does.

This reminds me of the beginner's mind concept.

    3. Design thinking and talent management

The best leaders have empathy for their teams. If you're in charge of a team, you need to consider their needs. What barriers do you need to remove to enable them to do their best work? How can you ensure diversity of thought in your team? How can you empower your team to take action?

“We cannot use the lens that we had during the Industrial Revolution to imagine the future of work. It's a different world. People, technology, and data will continue to drive how work gets done, and it's not going to be butts in seats and nine to five."

    4. Core values

"Your beliefs become your thoughts, your thoughts become your words, your words become your actions, your actions become your habits, your habits become your values, your values become your destiny." — Mahatma Gandhi

Should core values like integrity be explicitly stated as part of an organization's core values? Shouldn't it be a no-brainer?

    5. Forcing functions

Starting a company is like jumping off a cliff and assembling a plane on the way down, quoting Reid Hoffman.

“Ask yourself: how you can achieve your 10 year plan in the next 6 months?” - Peter Thiel.

    6. The Fiver Principles

    Notes from Ben Hardy:

Five Principles to achieve anything you want:

    1. Selective Attention - What you focus on expands - Intense observation of who you want to learn from

    2. Become very clear about what you want and imagine clearly your future self

    3. Share your outcome. Be public about it

    4. ReInvest in your future self. Investment increases commitment

    5. Become hyper-results oriented and committed to the effective actions needed to get your outcome!

    My note:

Pathways thinking - Who not what. It DOES NOT take 10,000 hours to master a skill. It takes a mentor and a master.

    7. Learning

"The purpose of learning isn't to affirm our beliefs; it's to evolve our beliefs" - Think Again by Adam Grant

This is especially critical for leaders in a fast-changing world.

    8. The cost of Failure

“Invention requires two things: 1. The ability to try a lot of experiments, and 2. not having to live with the collateral damage of failed experiments” - Andy Jassy

There has never been a better time to build a startup and products. The cost of failure has never been cheaper.

    9. A book over the candle-stick

Choose a book over the candle-stick chart. The markets are just doing what they do best ebbs and flows.

    10. A Quote I was pondering

“I am one of those who think, like Nobel, that humanity will draw more good than evil from new discoveries.” ― Marie Curie
