10 Reasons Why I Use a Steno Book to Record Ideas

Steno Books are notepads with line down the middle of the pages and were originally used for stenography. I bought a pack of 12 from a Staples a couple of years back mistaking them for ordinary notepads. One day, I decided to use one of them for writing down my ideas, and I still do so to this day.

    1. The Line in the Middle Makes It Easy to Add First Steps on the Side

Since the page is divided into two, I usually write my ideas on the left side of the page and any first steps for execution on the right side. I might also use the right side to add context to my ideas instead.

    2. People Won’t Ask to You to Take Their Order

If you want people to ask you to take their order, feel free to use a waiter's pad like James does.

    3. The Size of the Pages Allow For More Detailed Ideas

The pages are a bit bigger than a memo or waiter's pad, allowing me to flesh out my ideas a bit more. They aren't as big as an ordinary notebook, so I'm still encouraged to keep my ideas brief when I can.

    4. It Doesn’t Look as Unusual as Carrying a Waiter’s Pad

Since a steno book looks just like an ordinary notepad from the outside, people won't think much of it.

    5. It Easily Fits Into a Briefcase

I admit you can't put it into your pocket like a waiter's pad, but it's still fairly portable.

    6. It Feels Dignified While Still Being Cheaper Than a Fancy Journal

I always feel guilty writing in one of those fancy moleskin journals. I feel if I'm not writing absolute gold, I'm sullying the pages within. Steno books are affordable enough that I'm perfectly fine filling them with mediocre and terrible ideas until I come up with a good list by mistake.

    7. It Gives Me a Reason to Use the Big Pack of Steno Books I Bought

    8. I Can Use the Right Side for Ideas Too

Not all idea lists lend themselves to explanations or first steps towards execution. In these cases, you can write ideas on the right side of the page as well.

    9. It Is Easy to Go Back and Look at Old Ideas Worth Considering

I can easily flip back to ideas I made a while ago and see if an idea list I scribbled a couple of months ago was really as good as I remembered.

    10. I Can Easily Rip Out Pages if I Want To

I haven't done this yet, but if I wanted to, I could rip pages out without worrying about damaging the steno book itself.
