10 Reasons Why Men Should Trim Their Own Hair

I started trimming my hair shortly after all the barbershops closed at the beginning of the pandemic. It was such a revelation that even when things opened back up, I never went back to someone else cutting my hair. I use a standard pair of Wahl clippers and clipper guards and it couldn't be easier.

    1. Trimming your own hair saves money.

I used to pay $35 plus a tip to my last barber. A good pair of clippers cost no more than $30, and if you take care of them they'll last for years.

    2. You save time when you don't have to go to a barbershop.

It takes me a grand total of 10 minutes to groom my hair, a time that includes trimming, clean-up shaving, washing my hair, and clean-up.

When going to a barbershop, there was the 20-minute drive there and back, the 30 minutes sitting in the chair, and then of course, even when I had an appointment, I'd often have to wait.

    3. You can do it at any time and at your convenience.

You can do it at any time and at your convenience.

    4. Once you get good at it, your hair can look just as good (or at least close) as getting it cut.

Now, if you haven't done it before, it does take a bit of practice. I recommend going on YouTube, as there are many good videos on how to trim one's hair.

    5. Most men are better off with short-cropped hair.

That's no knock on my long-haired brothers. You do you. But let's face it, it takes a lot more effort to maintain long hair than short hair. We're busy, we're active, and we have things to do that are more important than crimping, curling, styling, and being overly vain about what's sitting on our noggins.

    6. You never need to purchase any special hair product.

The other nice thing about short hair is you don't need to put any product in it - another money and time savings. I mean, you can get some foo-foo stuff to put in there, but do you really need to? No.

    7. You don't have to worry about making small talk with the barber.

If you're highly social then maybe this is something you'd miss. For me, I'm not a fan of small talk, even with barbers I've known and gone to for a long time.

    8. You don't have the hassle of making an appointment, driving to the barber shop, and then sitting and waiting for your turn.

I've already discussed the time savings of trimming your own hair, but there's the simple annoyance of having to go through the routine of going to get your hair cut. All that goes away when you do it yourself.

    9. You're more independent since you don't have to rely on anyone to groom your hair.

    Enough said.

    10. You can easily experiment with differing lengths.

The standard set of clippers will come with guards of varying lengths. This allows you to play with different trim lengths. For me, I like it a little longer so I can do a little something with my hair. Others trim it military style. You can easily experiment and decided what you like best.
