10 reasons why you should send your kids to study in Europe (for US audiences)
I'm originally from Europe, and have been living in the US for more than 20 years. I've sent my oldest son to study in The Netherlands (currently), and my younger one destined to do the same. Pay attention!
1. Save money (tons of it!)
Knowing the scam it is currently (to study) in this country, you're looking at your biggest financial arbitrage of your life. Cents on the $ my friends.2. Explore the world outside the US
Going to Florida or Vegas is not "traveling" ... We're not the center of the universe - in fact, less and less so, as things are moving eastwards inextricably. Better get with the program.3. Learn about another cultures
And in Europe, that means 27 very different cultures to experience (I'm leaving the UK out of it right now, since they're ... yes, out!)4. Learn another languages (optional)
No longer required, as more and more English only programs are being offered across the board. However, it's one of the best ways to keep your brain humming till very late in life - I speak my 4 languages every day, and it's a lot of fun. Need motivation? Get your next girl/boyfriend from the country (language) of your choice - trust me, works wonders. I worked for me.5. Education there is valued highly and publicly
You average EU basic education is free, and college education is heavily subsidized. Colleges are being paid a subsidy per student, and therefore, very incentivized to attract more and more of them. Especially international students, as demographic decline is hitting hard. Being a teacher is highly regarded, and guess what, you can actually get paid more than a living wage.6. Competitiveness
When you come back with a European degree, right off the bat you'll be having a competitive advantage to any of your US peers, as you will have shown a lot of qualities that employers appreciate highly.7. Normalcy
You're in a part of the world where guns are a rarity; where you can still have a discussion and disagree with someone, and still walk out the same door together. Where academic excellence still matters (and no focus on less "tangible" and "soft" metrics); where it is still ok to have a ranking of who's the best; etc. etc. Hope you catch my drift.8. Architecture
Sometimes modern, but oftentimes stunningly old and beautiful. Yes, some US colleges are referred to as old ... but did you know that in 2025, Leuven Catholic University (Belgium) is celebrating its 600th year of existence? Take that!9. Perspective
Living abroad / in Europe for an extended period, you'll start to appreciate the "better things in life"; that's there is more than just making (more) money; that being friends means something more than just being friends; that your mindset is one that is more open to the world; that you start seeing and appreciating things in a very different way; in a nutshell: you'll have given your kids a gift for life - one that they will carry home forever, and be forever grateful for.10. Save more money
With all the money that you will not be spending by doing this (possibly, and easily, saving $100K+ for a full degree) you can send your offspring into the world with NO debt to carry, NO interest or capital repayment to make EVER, putting them on a patch to accelerated success, whatever comes to them. Not sure they'll wanna come back though ...
