10 Steps To Becoming A Viral Video Making Machine

One of the things I've been working on recently:

Leveling up my viral video making skills.

Because it's important. People are watching more video than ever. And viral videos are an easy way to get more eyeballs on your projects. And your products. And your business.

They help you get more followers and subscribers too. All while reducing ad costs.

Anyways, just wanted to do a little brain dump and get this out of my head so I can use it as a checklist...

    1. Understand the brain's cognitive biases like the back of your hand. Because all viral videos tap into human cognitive biases.

    2. Read books (over and over again) that go deep on the brain's cognitive biases. Like "Influence" by Robert Cialdini, "Poor Charlie's Almanac" by Charlie Munger, and "Contagious" by Jonah Berger.

    3. Regularly watch (and save) viral videos on YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok. Dissect them. Reverse engineer them. And figure out which cognitive biases they tap into.

    4. Transcribe the video scripts of viral videos. And copy them out again and again. So the principles of virality get burnt into your brain. Until it becomes second nature.

    5. Start from scratch and... try to create a "close-to-exact" replica of the viral videos you're dissecting. Just for practice. And to tune into the fine nuances of the video.

    6. Create your own original viral video based on the viral video you're dissecting and reverse engineering. Use a different angle, product, or theme. But try to hit all the same cognitive biases used in the video you're dissecting.

    7. Study the background music used in recent viral videos. Notice if any type of music is used again and again. Break down the music and try to understand the feeling the music creates.

    8. Study viral video YouTube thumbnails. 80 to 90% of the success of a video on YouTube boils down to the thumbnail.

    9. Practice making your own viral video thumbnails on YouTube using successful thumbnails as a base. Take old videos you have on your channel. Swap the thumbnails every few weeks. See if the views go up. Repeat until it does. Keep practicing.

    10. Pay close attention to the first 15 to 30 seconds of a viral video. The opening plays a massive role in whether people watch the rest of the video. Reverse engineer as many successful openings as you can.

    11. (BONUS) Deeply understand the target market you're making the viral video for. Especially things that give them intense pain. And sublime pleasure. Understand their hot buttons. And the emotions they connect the most to.
