10 Things I don't like about Hurricanes

I live in central Florida, and Hurricane Melvin is happening as I write this. Thankfully, it seems to be relatively mild here.

I have been talking a lot to my friend from Puerto Rico, and he's been without power for months at a time and has had to be rescued off his roof several times, so I can count my blessings.

    1. They can leave you with a stress response

in 2004 we had four hurricanes in a few months, my house was damaged and we were one of the "blue tarp people." It was a frightening time for a lot of reasons, and I don't think I will get over it.

    2. While they can be very dangerous, the Weather Channel and other coverage has a tendency to overhype each one

So I never know which is real. I am relieved but burnt out. My wife will watch the weather Channel for hours as a storm approaches. This stresses me out.

    3. Cleanup can be tedious

    4. The scale of destruction and power of a storm is difficult to imagine until it happens

Before the wind reaches full strength, you can see large oak trees blown around like grass.

    5. If you did stock up and it missed you, you now have dozens of gallons of water and gasoline that you don't need

    6. They are quickly politicized either to talk about Global Warming or to blame the government

    7. It causes insurance to get dropped

Insurance companies rarely go out of business...

    8. I would like to do more to help others

But I fight inertia, and I also feel powerless.

    9. Boarding and unboarding a house is hard work and can wreck your exterior

    10. Flooding is a secondary risk and can be more dangerous than the wind

    11. Running a house with a generator is sketchy and can be dangerous
