10 things I learned from “Designing Your Life”by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans
Five mindsets:
1. The curiosity mindset
You can sometimes run out of passion, but you can never run out of curiosity.
2. Try stuff: bias to action mindset
How can we do something before the end of the day? What can we do right now?
3. Reframe problems: the reframing mindset
Reframing a problem to have a different perspective. What is the customer's perspective? What is the operations perspective? What is my mother’s perspective? What would this situation look like to a police officer?
Your own personal point of view is a lens through which you see the world. Other people have their own lenses with their own distortions and colors.
4. Everything is a process: the awareness mindset
Know that life and everything inside of life is a process. Embrace the process. Realize that you are on a particular step, even if it is finishing a particular project.
5. Ask for help: the radical collaboration mindset
Keep an ask-for-help journal where you can jot down questions you might ask somebody.
6. Your compass is your general direction
Evaluate this regularly: every quarter: every 12 week year.
7. Your practices are what you do on a regular basis.
8. Prototyping ideas
Experiment with different options.
9. There is no one right career/house/spouse/meal.
Many options are adequate at any given time. Each decision can lead to other decisions. Holding off until you reach a perfect decision is a barrier to progress.
