10 things I learned from Outer Order, Inner Calm by Gretchen Rubin

    1. Sometimes if you don't need it, you can take a picture of it and then get rid of it

    2. Before you organize something, make sure you should keep it. You don't need to organize something that's no longer around.

    3. Ask yourself three questions with anything: do you need it? do you use it? do you love it?

If not, throw it away, donate it, or gift it.

    4. Gather like items together

Sometimes it is hard to see clutter because you have a pair of scissors in every room. Gather all like items together to see how much you have.

    5. Put items out of context

Sometimes it is hard to see whether something is clutter when it's nicely organized or shelved away. But if you take it out and put it somewhere out of context (in the bathroom, in the bedroom), you'll see that it's not needed.

    6. Things often get messier before they get tidier

    7. Don't let perfect be the enemy of good

You don't need to find the perfect spot for things, you just need to find a good enough spot.

    8. Every time you travel from one room to another, take one item with you.

The item will slowly but surely get closer to its home.

    9. Create a holding box

For items you are not sure if you need or not, create a box and store all the items in there. If you haven't opened the box in a year, donate all the items in the box.

    10. Be realistic with your clothing

Are you really going to wear it? Does it fit? Is it part of your identity? Don't keep something around because 'someday' you are going to wear it or that you used to wear it.
