Unfortunately in that time in history armed defense was necessary in parts of the country.

4. There were Klan based murders in Philadelphia in the 1960s and a campaign of violence
5. Black people were targeted and beaten by police in many parts of the country.
This is horrible. They had few options and nobody to ask for help.

8. The freedom fighters were targeted with violent beatings and had their luggage set on fire
9. In many communities the Klu Klux Klan was essentially in partnership with the police
People would be kidnapped and passed back and forth and tortured or arrested on trumped up charges.
10. The jails would torture black (or white) people that were arrested for protesting
They used corporal punishment and sleep deprivation anime other techniques
