    1. There were 5 major groups in the early 60s that needed to coordinate their efforts

    2. There was conflict between people that were nonviolent with people that were armed with guns

Unfortunately in that time in history armed defense was necessary in parts of the country.

    3. Stokely Carmichael went to jail repeatedly. He coined the expression “black power” and Willie Riggs took up the expression at a rally

    4. There were Klan based murders in Philadelphia in the 1960s and a campaign of violence

    5. Black people were targeted and beaten by police in many parts of the country.

This is horrible. They had few options and nobody to ask for help.

    6. In the 1960s Marching and speeches were the way that the civil rights movement was promoted

    Before the internet.....

    7. There were many confrontations between police and activists where shots were fired

    8. The freedom fighters were targeted with violent beatings and had their luggage set on fire

    9. In many communities the Klu Klux Klan was essentially in partnership with the police

People would be kidnapped and passed back and forth and tortured or arrested on trumped up charges.

    10. The jails would torture black (or white) people that were arrested for protesting

They used corporal punishment and sleep deprivation anime other techniques

    11. After reading this I have a new perspective on the violence and fear in that terrible era.
