10 things I learned from"Breath The New Science of a Lost Art" by James Nestor

From the blurb: "There is nothing more essential to our health and well-being than breathing: take air in, let it out, repeat twenty-five thousand times a day. Yet, as a species, humans have lost the ability to breathe correctly, with grave consequences."

As soon as I listened to this I started to breathe through my nose as much as I can. I feel better so maybe there is something to it!

    1. Shrinking the mouth (removing wisdom teeth, etc) can lead to trouble breathing and sleep apnea

I had orthodontics and many teeth removed and I also have sleep apnea. I don't know if this is exactly cause and effect or a coincidence but it is something to consider.

    2. Breathe through your nose only

He said this 100 times in 100 ways. I guess it is important.

    3. When you are exerting yourself and breathing hard you are taking in too much oxygen: try breathing less and more slowly

    4. You actually need to monitor your carbon dioxide for improving stamina, not oxygen

    5. Many religions have a 6 second prayer: this coincides with the ideal length of a breath

    6. Many religions also focus on breathing as healing

    7. It is possible to regrow bones in your face even as an adult if you change your breathing and chewing

    8. The onset of mouth breathing and it’s health problems coincided with the introduction or cooked/processed softer foods

Cultures that eat more raw foods need to chew more. Vigorous chewing keeps the mouth area strong and open: you will need all of your teeth!

    9. Some people and cultures have developed extreme control over their breathing and body functions

    10. Apparently the yogic breathing of in one nostril and out the other is a thing…

I will have to try this more often.
