10 Things I love about Civ V
Although I try not to spend too much time gaming, there's one game I can't get enough of: Civ V. There's a Civ VI as well, and I've played it a bit, but it doesn't hold a candle to Civ V. Here are some of my favorite things about the video game that might explain why I keep playing hour after hour.
1. It's a strategy game that you have to put a lot of thought into
I'm not a fan of arcade games because I get bored of them quickly. With Civ, I'm constantly thinking, making plans, reacting to stimuli (e.g. a declaration of war), and weighing the pros and cons of my actions.
2. It's historically accurate and the technologies, importance of religion, exploration, and more all track with how humanity made progress
Each player actually gets to choose which technologies they want to study towards and when, but you're constrained by the technologies that have been discovered previously. For example, you can't discover the printing press before you discover writing.
3. You can choose to play as 1 of countless incredible historical leaders
I'm currently playing as Wu Zetian, empress of China in the 600's A.D.
4. Each game is customizable and different
You can choose to play on different maps, with different leaders, with different constraints... basically, you never run out of new scenarios to face.
5. Enough people play that it's possible to find live games
I don't game much at all outside of Civ, but every once in a while I do like playing a live game. It's fun because you can talk to other players, and humans play very differently from the AI.
6. There are several expansion packs
There's the original game, and then there are plenty of expansion packs that expand the realm of gameplay and make it even more fun.
7. New mods are released all the time and make gameplay even more fun
Similar to the above, except mods are free and not created by the game developers. Still, they're great because they add new leaders, technologies, maps, and more to the game.
8. It's inexpensive
For the newbies out there: since Civ V isn't the newest version in the game series, it's very cheap. I think I bought a game pack on G2A for only $10, and it included all the expansion packs.
9. The online community is active, and there's lots of great content to watch and consume
There are some really good Youtube channels about Civ, and I like watching their videos and seeing their strategy tips.
10. It's part of a series
There are 6 Civ games, and there may be more to come still. The developers know how much people love the series, so they're constantly innovating and bringing more games into the Civ universe. This is fun because it makes the game novel again.
