10 ways for managing work-related stress

    1. Talk to your manager

If you feel like you have too much on your plate, talk to your manager. Tell them you want to make sure you're working on the most important things so work with them to prioritize what you have (lower priorities get done later)

    2. Make sure you really disconnect

It's 5 pm and you're off work, but you still have your phone with you and you're still responding to slack messages, teams notes or emails. That means you're not really off work.

    3. Prioritize your rest

Evenings and weekends are to completely disconnect and recharge.

    4. It can wait

Whatever it is can wait. Nothing is so critical that it can't wait another day. (And if you work in a job that has critical deadlines, ignore this). Sometimes the deadlines we have in our heads are made up or self-imposed.

    5. Find ways to work out your stress

Exercising, talking about work-related issues with your partner, video games - find a way to get some stress out.

    6. Delegate or delete

Delegate if you can. Or don't do tasks that aren't important.

    7. Wash your hands

A study found that prison guards who washed their hands at the end of the day were better able to disconnect from their stressful job. The 'ritual' of washing their hands clean made it feel like they were washing their hands of the 'dirt' from their job.

The important thing here isn't to wash your hands but to find your own ritual for when something changes from work to non-work - maybe its changing your clothing or its walking around the block.

    8. Take frequent breaks

Using the pomodoro technique - you get a 5 minute break for every 25 minutes of focused time you work. And then a longer break after 3 or 4 pomodoros.

    9. 3-4 hours of focused work

Most people, with meetings and other administrative activities they have to do, only put in about 3-4 hours of focused work every day. And that's okay. Realize you won't get a 8-hour block of time.

    10. You don't always have to be hustling

Go to people's social media and you'll see them always doing new things. They seem to be getting new gigs to speak or flying off to a conference they are doing a keynote for. Just because that's their life doesn't mean you have to be like that too.
