Asking via text/whatsapp allows the person to consider the offer, which makes her more comfortable, and being a gentleman is all about making people comfortable.

The worst case scenario is a "no." Better to get a "no" than to be a coward.

If she says yes, suggest something that won't break the bank. A coffee, a walk in the park, play a boardgame, go thrifting. Something that is low investment that you think she'll enjoy. Don't take her to an expensive restaurant right off the bat. It'll create too much pressure and expectations, which sucks the fun out of it. It will also weed out the people who are only interested in an expensive meal or a sugar daddy.

If you have expectations, you're more likely to be disappointed if the date doesn't go the way you had envisioned it in your head. Real life is very different than the movies.
