    1. Hanalei Bay, Kauai, Hawaii

Long before Hollywood put it on the tourist map (first with "South Pacific" in 1958, then "The Descendants" half a century later), Hanalei Bay attracted locals for its near-mystical beauty. Its string of beaches — Wai'oli, Hanalei Pavilion, and Black Pot — is framed by jade-colored mountains hurtling 4,000 feet high. The area is popular with surfers in the winter, when the waves pick up size and speed.

    2. Anse Source D'Agent, La Digue Island, Seychelles

The word "Seychelles" conjures the very image of a dreamy, far-flung paradise. Luckily, the Seychelles reality every bit measures up to the fantasy, with exquisite beaches, intensely green nature reserves, and majestic wildlife at every turn. Anse Source D'Agent exemplifies the unique Seychellois beach formula, defined by a translucent lagoon perfect for snorkeling and wavy granite boulders that seem tossed onto the shore by ancient giants.

    3. Bora Bora, French Polynesia

Sugar sand, palms, breeze, sea that’s 26-29C year round and the colour of peppermint mouthwash... Bora Bora is a cliched vision of the heavenly beach. Even if you never get to go, this is one for the mental image bank at least – use it when meditating.

    4. Boracay, Philippines

At less than four square miles, this compact Philippine island grew up fast, transforming from under-the-radar to overtouristed in the span of a few rocky decades, and it was temporarily shut down in 2018 to allow for much-needed redevelopment and rehabilitation. The island’s most famous beach is the three-mile White Beach, where the sugary sands provide the perfect blank canvas for viewing magical sunsets and blue-sailed paraws (outrigger boats) that skim along the horizon. On Boracay’s eastern shores, steady winds make for some of the best kiteboarding and windsurfing conditions in the region.

    5. Maldives

Don’t come to the Maldives expecting expansive stretches of sand: The Indian Ocean nation is made up of some 1,200 pocket-sized coral islands, with the largest being only about three square miles. The beaches are appropriately intimate, but it’s their exclusivity that keeps you coming back, with three Maldivian spots showing up on our best resorts in the world list this year.

    6. Palawan, Philippines

Protected as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, your third favourite island in Asia doesn’t skimp on the geological drama, from its karst limestone cliffs to its subterranean river. Offshore, its trapped-in-time beaches give way to an underwater landscape of seagrass meadows and coral reefs, which are home to sea turtles, dolphins, manatee-like dugongs, and endangered giant clams. You’ll find some of the most gorgeous and unspoiled beaches along the island’s northern tip in El Nido, which takes its name from the Spanish words for “the nest”—a reference to the swiftlets who build their (edible) nests on the cliff faces. And it’s also the perfect gateway for island-hopping among the lush and mostly uninhabited islets of the Bacuit Bay archipelago.

    7. British Virgin Islands

You can snorkel off of White Bay Beach on Jost Van Dyke, sail away to remote and uninhabited Sandy Spit, or follow the crowds to The Baths National Park, where enormous boulders—some as big as 40 feet in diameter—set the boundaries for calm natural pools.

    8. Fiji

Boasting 333 islands, resplendent resorts, sparkling waters and endless stretches of pristine sand, Fiji is the perfect spot for paradise-seeking beachgoers. Travelers who want to snorkel while on vacation should set their sights on Taveuni's diverse coral reefs. Meanwhile, those pining for the tropical beaches featured in the movie "Cast Away" and multiple seasons of the TV show "Survivor" can catch a ferry from Port Denarau and head directly to one of the 20 islands that make up the Mamanuca Islands. Popular options include Qalito Island (also known as Castaway Island) and Vomo Island.

    9. Mauritius

This scenic African island, which sits east of Madagascar, offers a multitude of beaches worth prioritizing. Visitors say the island's west coast is where you'll find the best strips of shoreline, including Flic en Flac and Le Morne beaches, which feature beautiful white sand and superb vantage points for sunsets. Those who appreicate beaches near amenities will prefer north coast shores like Grand Baie, while those seeking a more remote beach experience will enjoy visiting spots like Île aux Cerfs and Blue Bay.
