Best Practices for Mental Toughness? Show me yours, I'll show you mine.

    1. Go with the flow

Most of the things that bother you now will be forgotten in 12 months' time. See experiences as part of a flow. It ebbs, it flows. Things come and they go. Nothing lasts forever, neither the good nor the bad. The more you can take a step back and see certain things in life with detachment, the easier things will be.

    2. Expectations

Have fewer expectations of how something should be and enjoy it for what it is. When I met my (now) husband in 2015, I had zero expectations of meeting anyone. I was happily single. What's meant for you in life will find you.

    3. Fear

Most often our fears are not realised. Or, at the very worst, we will come through the experience. There's a lot I could say here about pivotal moments and transformation. When Chris, my husband, went blind he lived through four terrible years coming to terms with his sight loss. He was afraid to go out, to do simple things because he lived in darkness. But, eventually, he adjusted and embraced who he now was, and his life transformed in ways he could never have imagined.

    4. Time frame

If you're doing something that makes you afraid or anxious, it's useful to time frame it. Say, in half an hour this will be over. Or, tomorrow, it will be behind me. I find that helpful as a way of containing something I have to do but which might not be pleasant or comfortable.

    5. Write it down

I've kept a journal of sorts for a long time. When I was going through trying times I would often sit in a café with notebook and pen and rant in my notebook! I'd just download what I was thinking and feeling. If you can't share your thoughts with someone else, it's a useful practice as it gets all of this out of your head. Later, when you look through your notes you'll see how much life has changed. And then, if you want, you can burn your notebooks, which I did.

    6. Get busy doing other things

Do things you love. Don't dwell. Keep yourself busy.

    7. Walk

Walking is good in so many ways. In my 30s and 40s, I used to walk for hours on my own. It helped me clarify things in my head, clear my head, and whatever had been concerning beforehand, disappeared as I focused on what was around me.

    8. Detox

Stop watching/reading the news. Spend less time on social media. Focus on your own thoughts rather than what is fed to you. Form your own opinions and philosophy of life. Stay away from negative people. Choose who you associate with carefully. Don't get caught up in gossip.

    9. Be pragmatic

While other people are talking about doing something, just do it.

    10. Live your life

Get on with your life. Be clear about what you love and do more of that. Be prepared to forge your own path. Don't put off until tomorrow what you could do today.
