Biases To Watch Out For When Hiring

The first thing hiring managers need to learn is how to hire. Amazon standardizes the hiring process and coaches people on how to hire.

    1. Similarity Bias

Human beings are naturally drawn to people who are similar to them. Going to the same school or having similar hobbies are some examples of this bias

    2. Availability Bias

The hiring team may have heard rumors about a company from recruiters, which may impact their decision. Say the hiring manager recently read that the company the candidate is leaving has a low retention rate, so they assume the candidate may just leave even though their resume doesn't reflect hop from one company to another.

    3. Halo effect

This is when the hiring manager focuses on a positive aspect of the candidate. I have seen this in action, especially when people attend famous schools.

    4. Overconfidence

Hiring is hard. Following your gut is not always the best strategy.

    5. Effective heuristic

I see this a lot in Japan. Hiring managers may think that people with certain haircuts, tattoos, etc., are unsuitable for certain jobs.
