Books that will change how you view the world

I've read tons of books.  Here's a few that really changed how I viewed the world.

    1. Win Bigly

This book helps explain why different people can view the same event and see two different things.

It examined Trump's run to president in 2016.  Some people saw a hero and others saw Hitler.  Scott Adam's explains how both came to their conclusion and the right way to view what Teumps says/does.

If you view it through the truth filter you'll ended up shocked, but if you view it under the persuasion filter you realise that he's a master of his craft.

Highly recommend as it's about more than Trump it's about learning to see the world through the persuasion lens.

    2. Alchemy

If you still think truth matters this book will show you how little it does.

Mint doesn't make toothpaste any more effective yet noones going to buy one that tastes of something else.

Tablet's all use the same chemical's, yet it's the brand name that works best.  Not because it's better, it's the same.  It's the placebo effect.

People don't mind waiting longer, if we know how long it will take.  It's the uncertainty that annoys us.

This book showed me how little logic matters and to embrace the psyco-logical.  If something makes you feel good it doesn't need to make logical sense.

    3. Fact-fulness

This book showed me how wrong I was about the state of the world.  I was already sceptical, but I still didn't realise how good things actually are now.

That would have been enough reason for this book, but it's even better than that.  It shows you how people are misreading data and how to properly read it.

For example - Imagine two graphs.  The bottom is the month, the left hand side is sales (1) and Deaths (2) and both start off low on January, build up to a peak in July then fall again to low numbers in June. The title of these graphs 1 - ice cream sales and 2 - Deaths by sharks.

You might assume since both have a similar graph that one causes the other.  If we stop selling ice-cream then shark death's would also stop.  It's basic science right?  Wrong.  They both follow the same curve because hotter days lead to swimming and wanting an ice cream.

All too often similar mistakes are made when it comes to real world events, read this book and learn how to defend yourself against bad maths.

    4. Outliers

his book explains that hard work isn't the main factor in becoming a sports star.  Infant your star sign is much more likely to determine how successful you'll be.  Why Asian's have a huge head start in maths, due to their language.  How politeness can get you killed.

This book is great.  Highly recommended.
