Burbathlon Thoughts

I "invented" Burbathlon years ago. It's basically going for a run through the suburbs and using local features like picnic tables, benches, trees, and fences to incorporate strength and/or co-ordination agility work and climbing and jumping.

I recently tried it out again instead of lifting weights at the gym and here's what I love about it.

    1. Variety

I get bored easily and demotivated too. Long runs can do that, and multiple sets of weight lifting too. In a Burbathlon workout I'm constantly switching to something else.

    2. Local Geography

It's a great way to explore my neighbourhood.

    3. Strength

Squats, modified push-ups and many other strength exercises can be done as part of the workout.

    4. Cardio

You get from exercise to exercise by running. There's your cardio.

    5. Balance

Getting over obstacles and doing balance beam work on narrow ledges or curbs.

    6. Coordination/Agility

    See above.

    7. Outdoors

It's all done in the fresh air (and hopefully sunshine).

    8. Fun

It can be very unstructured and is very play-like.

    9. Creative

The first time I'm exploring a new route, I have to look at all the features (especially man-made ones) and think of how I could use them to incorporate a strength move, or navigate getting over/under it.

    10. Recovery

When a joint starts to complain about running, I can transition to a strength move. When I'm fatigued from a strength move, a slow jog comprises active recovery.
