Colloquialisms that come from horse racing

    1. dead weight

    lead pads added to the saddle so the horse can carry a precise weight

    2. photo finish

    when horses are close at the finish line, it's called a photo finish because they are so close you need to consult the photo to see who won

    3. off by a nose

    in a photo finish, you are off by a nose if you come in second place only by the width of the horse's nose

    4. on track

    5. I don't have a horse in the race

    6. trifecta

    A special kind of bet where you bet who will come in first, second, and third

    7. also-ran

    When a horse races but doesn't come in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd.

    8. home stretch

    A stretch is the part of the track without the turns. The home stretch is the last part of the track that is after the last turn and ends at the finish line.

    9. fast-track

    Rating of a dirt track that is dry and hard.

    10. front runner

    A horse that likes to run at the front of the pack when racing.
