Day 2 - Weekend Woodturning Demo
Back home now.
1. Village Life
We arrived on Friday - the drive took 4 hours as there were some traffic delays. We booked into the pub where we were staying, and then had a wander around the village, and did a recce of the venue for the following day.
2. Red hot
Friday was boiling! And our room was very hot. It cooled down some time early morning but had already begun to heat up again when we went for a walk before breakfast.
3. Ghyll
There was a stream running through the village. We sat at a picnic table for a while and walked down some steps to the edge of the stream. Not sure if it's what Cumbrians would call a Ghyll.
4. Factory architecture
I'm guessing these are of Victorian design. A lot of the houses were what I call villas. This is part of the factory. We think they make paper products.
5. Three dates
There were three dates on the wall - 1717, 1855 and 1885. Not sure which applied to the building or whether the others had been brought in from elsewhere. I liked the font on this one.
6. Bus shelter?
We weren't sure of the original purpose of this building. Possibly a bus shelter for workers from the factory.
7. Institute
This is where we spent Saturday. I loved the detail and architecture. It was a lovely building and more appealing than many of the venues we visit.
8. Adjacent building door
I'm guessing this has connections with the Institute next door. Loved this door surround and the red stone.
9. Benefactor
I don't think the library still exists but there are many original features - wood panelling, committee rooms, gorgeous front door, vaulted ceiling.
10. Door handles
I wondered whether this was original. I itched to give it a polish!
