How can we teach subjects in a better way?

I'm mostly just repeating what others have said but here are my thoughts anyway:

    1. Self-Directed Learning

Having a curriculum with defined milestones and a clear definition of success is a good roadmap but let the student and the teacher collaborate on which path to take to get there.

    2. Adding practical application to theory and academic study is always a better outcome.

    3. Students learn at different rates and in different ways.

I was always a fast learner academically but horrible in shop classes. Some of my friends were the opposite. But we all suffered in the same curriculum.

    4. Sometimes hard or boring classes really are necessary.

I still have difficulties with home repairs or cooking but those mandatory classes from junior high made sure that at least I was less likely to burn the house down.

    5. Balancing the needs (and expectations) of all students is difficult. And vital.

The old mantra of spending 80% of your time and energy on 20% of your people also holds true in the classroom. But all students need to be challenged. And all students should expect help and encouragement when needed. Smaller class sizes and group like learners together are two obvious ways to do this.

    6. Students may serve as mentors and peer support but do not take the place of instructors.

Peer collaborative education has its benefits. Empathy, compassion, friendship, a deeper understanding of the material, the ability to see a subject in a different light, are all benefits of this model. But it should not replace formal instruction or take time away from every student pushing their own limits.
