How do you help someone out of a cult?

    1. This can be a dangerous endeavor.

    While I am not an expert, I do have personal experience. Please be careful, tread lightly, and don't be afraid to ask for help

    2. You must meet the cult member where they are at.

    If you begin by challenging or attacking any decisions they have made; you are likely to be met by rejection, denial, and hostility.

    3. Understand you can only do so much.

    Careful conversation will be needed to ascertain whether immediate harm or danger exist.

    4. Suggest alternative viewpoints to be considered.

    But again, do not challenge or denigrate the cult.

    5. Illustrate a path out

    6. Be ready if and when they decide it is time to leave.

    You must respond, affirmatively, compassionately, and immediately.

    7. The person who recently left will need enormous support, space, and time.

    8. In many ways, belonging to a cult exhibits many of the same traits as addiction.

    Thinking of cult members as victims of addiction or addicts can sometimes help with understanding.
