What do you do?

That is always the first question people ask me when they meet me at events, or meetings, or dinners, or wherever. I tell them I am a speaker and coach.

How did you get into that?

That is always the second question they ask me. Since I cannot give the full answer I want to give, I usually just say I was doing some political speechwriting in New York City and wanted to give my own talks. Those that are interested will ask more. Those that are not will find someone else to ask the same first questions they asked me.

But if you want to be a speaker in some field, here are the first 10 steps I recommend to get started today. Since we may never meet in person, here is the exact first 10 things I did to launch my speaking career. And four years later, I am still doing it. So I guess they worked for me. I hope they will work for you, too.
