How to start a career as an outdoor writer

    1. Get good at something

I’ve written about this before. But to be an outdoor writer, you have to get good at one outdoor activity or many. I ski well, rock climb well, bike well, hike well, and some other things not so well but am getting better at them.

    2. Write down your stories

If you are going on a trip do a “day in the life of” write up every day. Or write down stories from your past experiences that would make great articles.

    3. Figure out who your audience is and write for them

For instance, I know people who love skiing so I write about that. Or people who want to start investing so I write about that (and even do newsletters). Or people interested in real estate investing so I do articles on that (I did a podcast with Andrew Coe about it). Or people interested in crypto (I don’t know much about this but will learn). Etc etc.

    4. Publish on multiple platforms:

My articles appear on Forbes, Entrepreneur, Thought Catalog, etc. But also Medium (which is great for traffic), my own site (jamesaltucher.com), Twitter (if you are good at writing short things), Facebook groups (if there is interest in what you are writing about), Quora (if there is interest in what you are writing about), Reddit (/r/todayilearned or /r/writing if it fits into their guidelines), and more.

    5. Don't be afraid to self-publish books or do podcasts or videos or whatever else works for you and your audience(s)

For instance, I just did a podcast with John Lee Dumas of "Entreepreneur" fame where we discussed how to be an entrepreneur AFTER 50! And I've done many video series including "How to Invest Your Money After 50", "How to Start a Business After 50", "How to Start a Blog After 50", and more.
