Ideas To Help Place 100 Students in Internships In Six Months

I recently connected with the chair of a Computer Science department at a respected public University (that's affordable, believe it or not). He shared with me that they're trying to place 100 students in internships/opportunities at Tech Companies in NYC in the next six months. NotePd.com community: come up with some ideas that we can share with him to accomplish this goal.

    1. Start a meetup

    Get people together in NYC who are interested in finding internships for CS students. There are many companies that would love to help out and sponsor such an event.

    2. Call up your alumni network

    CS students want to work at tech companies. Tech companies hire CS students. The alumni network of every CS department has connections at all the tech companies. This is a perfect matchmaking opportunity.

    3. Send out a survey to all the top Tech Companies in NYC asking what they're looking for, etc. and then share this with the community of CS students

    Include questions like "what skills do you want to develop", "what languages do you want to learn", "what job opportunities would you be interested in". And also include some standard questions about salary expectations, etc. so that employers have an idea of what they can afford to pay them (which is important). I think most employers would be willing to spend $1000-2000 on training if it means getting a new employee for less than $50K. NotePd community: let's find out from our contacts at various companies how much they'd be willing to spend on this sort of thing (if any). If there's enough interest, we should organize such a survey and share it with the Chair of this Computer Science Department so he knows what his students need help with and what opportunities are available.

    4. Create a database of opportunities/internships by company, by skill set, by location, etc.

    The first step is figuring out which skills each company needs help with (see above survey question). Then we create a database listing all opportunities where those skills are needed, whether it's remote or local opportunities, and then list them by salary range and other criteria (remote vs local). NotePd community: let's start putting together such lists so we can share them with the Chair of this Computer Science Dept as part of our advice on how his students can get 100 internships/jobs in six months time.
